A bobcat is another name for a Red Lynx (lynx rufus). As a general rule the red lynx is smaller then the canadian lynx (lynx canadensis). As its name suggests, the red lynx has a reddish-grey coat while the canadian lynx is greyish to yellowish in color. Both cats share the same native range in Northern Canada and are pretty hard to differentiate. A few key physical differences are:Ā

  • the lynx has longer ear tufts
  • the bobcat is smaller and redder in color
  • bobcats show very distinct black spotting on their coat
  • the lynx has longer back legs then their front legs while bobcats have pretty equal front and back legs
  • bobcats have a more varied diet and have been seen in human populated areas while the lynx is more secretive and feeds mostly on hare

It is noticeably harder to find real bobcat skulls since their are hard to tell from a lynx and once the skulls are cleaned, the differences are so minute that it is easy to confuse them. If you are lucky enough to have both, you may notice that the lynx skull is more angular and the bobcat skull is rounder overall.Ā

Those we currently have in stock are in a very good state!Ā
