The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a large omnivorous (predominantly carnivorous) mammal native to the Arctic. It is one of the largest land carnivores and is at the top of its food pyramid.

Perfectly adapted to its habitat, the polar bear has a thick layer of fat and fur that insulates it from the cold. The white color of its coat ensures an ideal camouflage on the ice floes and its black skin allows it to better preserve its body heat. With a short tail and small ears1, it has a relatively small, streamlined head and an elongated body, characteristic of its adaptation to swimming. The polar bear is sometimes considered a semi-aquatic marine mammal. It hunts both on land and in the water. Its life expectancy is 15 to 30 years. This species lives only on the [pack ice around the North Pole, at the edge of the Arctic Ocean. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates the polar bear population at about 26,000 individuals.
